Pakistan Postal Codes — Major Cities

A postal code (also called a zip or post code) is the five-digit number that helps Pakistan Post route your mail to the right post office. Pakistan introduced the system in 1988, and the codes are five digits: the first two identify the district, the last three narrow it to the local post office. You need a correct postal code for courier deliveries, job and bank forms, and online shopping — Amazon and many international stores ask for a valid Pakistani postal code at checkout, and getting it wrong can block an order.
What the format means
The five digits are not random. The first pair points to the sorting district (for example, the 54xxx range covers Lahore), and the final three identify the specific delivery post office within it. That is why a city has one code for its main General Post Office but many neighbourhoods have their own.
Why you need it
- Online shopping: international checkouts validate the postal code before they accept the order.
- Couriers: a precise code helps riders find the right delivery office.
- Banking and government forms: CNIC, account, and address forms routinely ask for it.
- Job and university applications: addresses are standardised by code.

How codes help couriers and forms
When a courier types your postal code, it pre-selects the delivery office, which speeds up sorting and reduces misroutes. On forms, the code is often used to validate the city you typed, so a wrong code can trigger a rejection even when the street address is correct.
Verifying a code
If you are unsure of the exact local code, the Pakistan Post mobile app and your nearest post office are the authoritative sources. The city-level code in the table above is a safe default, but the neighbourhood code is better for couriers. A quick call to the local post office settles it in minutes.
How to find your exact code
The numbers above are city-level codes (usually the main GPO). For an exact match to your area, use the Pakistan Post mobile app or ask your local post office — larger cities like Karachi and Lahore have several post offices, each with its own code. Using the precise code helps couriers deliver without a round-trip.
GPO vs local office
A 'GPO' is the General Post Office, the main one in a city. Using the GPO code for a neighbourhood that has its own office will usually still route eventually, but the local code is faster and more accurate.
Rural and unusual addresses
For villages and settlements without a named post office, use the nearest town's code and write the village name clearly in the address line. This keeps the shipment in the right sorting district.
A brief history
Pakistan's postal codes were introduced on 1 January 1988 by Pakistan Post to improve mail sorting and delivery. The five-digit structure has stayed stable since, which is why older addresses and forms still use the same codes today.
Common mistakes
- Using a city GPO code when your area has its own — deliveries can slow down.
- Guessing the code on an international order; an invalid code can block checkout.
- Mixing up similar cities (e.g., Gujrat vs Gujranwala).
A note on international shipping
When ordering from abroad, pair the postal code with the correct city and province (Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, or a territory) so the shipment clears sorting cleanly.
Codes are standardised by Pakistan Post; always confirm the exact code for your address before relying on it. (Source: Pakistan Post; cross-reference: Wikipedia 'Postal codes in Pakistan'.)
After you move
If you move within a city, your postal code usually changes with the neighbourhood. Update it on your bank, CNIC, and shopping accounts so statements and parcels keep arriving. A quick check with the new local post office gives you the correct code.
For businesses receiving mail
Shops and offices should print the full address with the postal code on invoices, websites, and courier slips. It speeds up both incoming deliveries and returns, and it is what courier apps expect when a rider types the code to find your delivery office.
When a code looks wrong
If an online form rejects your postal code, double-check you are using the five-digit figure, not a phone or CNIC number nearby on the page. If it still fails, try the city GPO code from the table as a fallback and confirm the exact local code with the post office afterward. A correct code is worth the one phone call it takes to verify.
